INSTITUTE FOR PATIENT-AND FAMILY-CENTERED CARE

Creating Sustainable Partnerships with Patients and Families in Research

TRANSFORMING HEALTH CARE THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS

Doing engagement right in research requires skills and strategies that have not always been a part of training for researchers. The Institute for Patient- and Family-Centered Care (IPFCC) have been advisers and coaches for the Meta-LARC ACP Trial. We have relied on their advice and their toolbox for engagement in research. They have resources, an online learning community, and events that support engagement in all aspects of healthcare, not just research.

THE CONVERSATION PROJECT

Dedicated to helping people talk about their wishes for end-of-life care

HAVE YOU HAD THE CONVERSATION?

Started in 2010 by writer Ellen Goodman, the Conversation Project is a public engagement initiative with the goal “to have every person’s wishes for end-of-life care expressed and respected.” The Project has developed Starter Kits to help people have conversations with family members, friends, or other loved ones about your or their wishes. They are free and available in several languages. They also have a guide for how patients can start the conversation with doctors or other health care professionals.

DO YOU ASK “WHAT MATTERS TO YOU?”

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement topic page on What Matters includes links to articles, blog posts, and videos that focus on the idea that asking patients, “What matters to you?” can impact the quality, safety, and joy of the health care workforce. There is also information on “What Matters to You” Day, occurring in June each year.
